The recent German-Russian Travelling Summer School 2009 used the opportunity to follow on-line a SANS
experiment performed at the JCNS instrument KWS-2 at the German neutron facility "Forschungs-Neutronenquelle
Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II)" in Garching. Watching the preparation of the experiment in the neutron
guide hall of FRM II in Garching live via the internet and following the measurement on-line in the
CIP-Pool area of the Physics Department of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, the
students actively participated for the first time as remote users of a SANS experiment. |

The German Russian Travelling Summer School on "Nanomaterials and Synchrotron X-ray Scattering" was organized between July 15-28 2009 by Andreas Magerl and Andrey Rempel of University of Erlangen and Ural State Technical University Ekaterinburg. The German and Russian students visited the German synchrotron facilities DESY in Hamburg and BESSY in Berlin. Next they attended a series of lectures and presentations in Erlangen including the on-line experiment at SANS instrument KWS-2 of JCNS at FRM II. Here two students brought their samples for measurement to Garching. The instrument scientist Aurel Radulescu explained live the SANS instrument and the measurement while the rest of the students followed the experiment broadcasted to Erlangen. In Erlangen second instrument scientist Vitaly Pipich showed the students the data reduction and evaluation procedures of the SANS experiment on-line with the experiment. |
Happy users after the SANS measurement. |
Using available communication techniques the demonstrated possibility of remote controlled SANS experiment
will be very useful in future possibilities to show and train students and interested researchers how to
work with neutron instruments and to perform measurements by indirect access on-line. JCNS will further
develop this option for the interested scientific community.
