NMI3 funding for European Users

JCNS is member of a network of European neutron facilities called the Integrated Infrastructure Initiative for Neutron Scattering and Muon Spectroscopy (NMI3). The NMI3 project is supported by the Europaen Commission through the 7th Framework Prpgramme as part of the Research Infrastructures Action of the Capacities Programme (Contract No. 226507). It brings together 21 partners from 13 countries, including 10 research infrastructures.

Within the NMI3 activity JCNS has received funds for Transnational Access foreseen for support of external users at JCNS coming from EU member states or associated states. The EU funds provide free a access to JCNS facility and provide support for travel and subsistence expenses for usually one scientist per experiment. The stay of the scientist includes the time for the experiment on-site as well as stay for prepration and data reduction.

The support by NMI3 is granted for experiments and access in the period Feb. 1. 2009 to Jan. 31. 2011.

Criteria for Eligibility
To be eligible to benefit from the Access to JCNS under the NMI3 action, a user group must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Both the user group leader or main proposer of the request for access and the majority of the user group members must be affiliated to an institute or organization in a EU member state except Germany or in an associated state.
Please note that the affiliation of the researchers is decisive, not their nationality.
  • The user group is entitled to publicise all results of the NMI3 supported experiments.
A list of EU contries and associated states eligible for funding can be found at the NMI3 web page.

Proposals
Please submit your proposal according to the actual Call for Proposals at JCNS.
  • Within your personal User Account at the JCNS online user office system you have to submit the proposal using the module Proposal.
  • Complete the form carefully with names and home institutions of the researchers expected to take part in the expreiment, because this information is necessary for the eligibility check.
Review
Together with all submitted proposals those eligible for EU funding will be examined by the JCNS Scientific Panel. The Panel assesses the scientific merits of all proposals and decides on prioroties and beam time allocation. A certain priority is given to young scientists, new neutron users and projects from countries, were no such neutron facility exists.
After the review was held, you will be informed if your proposal was accepted or not. In case you will get support from NMI3, you will be informedvia your personal User Account at the JCNS Digital User Office.

Acknowledgements
The NMI3 project must be acknowledged in any papers or conference proceedings that are published as result of this work. The following paragraph should be included in the acknowledgement section:

'This research project has been supported by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme through the 'Research Infrastructures' action of the 'Capacities Programme' Contract no.: 226507 (NMI3)'.

In addition the usual acknowledgement statement of Forschungszentrum Jülich is required.

We expect results of your experiment which you publish give proper credit to the JCNS staff members participating in the experiment and proper mention must be made of the JCNS facilities (preferably on the first page). JCNS considers it natural that local contacts who have made a significant contribution to the concept, design, execution, analysis or interpretation of user experiments should be offered the opportunity to be listed as authors in publications. You should in any case, as a minimum, acknowledge JCNS scientists with their JCNS affiliation at the end of your paper. You should agree with your local contact the terms of his/her involvement in the performance of your experiments and in data analysis before coming to JCNS. We would be grateful if you could follow to this point.

Reports
The EU-report form must be completed promptly after the completion of the experiment
  • Please note that this report for the European Commission is separate from any experimental report required by the JCNS for other purposes.
  • Please use the module "EU-Report NMI3" in your user account at the JCNS online user office system for submitting your report.
Please indicate the proposal number as reference.
Submit the EU user data form to be downloaded here.

EU Questionnaire
After the experiment, funded users are requested to complete the web form in the EU data base at EU questionnaire.
  • From the drop down menu in line 1 select NMI3 (226507)
  • The User Project Acronym to be entered in line 2 of this form is formed by JCNS followed by the proposal number sent toyou in the acceptance e-mail, e.g. JCNS_1234.

Personnel Data
You are required to provide some personal data, which will be recorded and used for the purpose indicated below.
  • Please complete the "User Data Form".You will receive it with your travel reimbursement forms after arrival at JCNS. In case you lost it, you can find it on the download page.

The data will be processed for funding, statistical and adminstrative purposes connected with your research, and to statistically analyse the membership of the neutron scattering community. The data are collected by the NMI3 project manager on behalf of the European Commission, and therefore may be accessed by the NMI3 project coordinators and the European Commission for official use only, and will remian confidential. Your personal data will be kept safe and secure and will not be shared with other organisations without your knowledge, unless this is required by law.
