80 Guests at JCNS Workshop 2010
80 Scientists from all over the world attended the recent JCNS Workshop 2010 "Trends and Perspectives in Neutron Scattering: Magnetism and Correlated Electron Systems" in the small village of Bernried at Lake Starnberg in the vicinity of Munich. The workshop led to intense and fruitful discussions upon the participants. Invited presentations were given in the field of frustrated magnets, quantum and low dimensional magnetism, magneto-calorics, pnictides, multiferroics and heavy fermions by leading experts.

First neutrons on BIODIFF
Another new instrument at the FRM II: The monochromatic single crystal diffractometer BioDiff has received the first neutrons last week. The instrument in the neutron guide hall west is operated in a cooperation between the neutron source FRM II and the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS). The first beam on October 4th hit a protein crystal of myoglobin, to test the capability of the instrument BioDiff. The result is promising. Further testing was performed with a powder of yttrium-iron garnet.

MARIA starts user operation
MARIA, the new new high flux polarised neutron reflectometer of JCNS at FRM II has entered the full user operation starting March 2011. The commissioning of the instrument is in progress and the capability of the instrument has been demonstrated successfully by in-house experiments in recent months to obtain unique data.

POWGEN starts user operation
POWGEN, the new ToF neutron powder diffractometer at SNS (ORNL) is about to enter the full user operation starting January 2011. JCNS contributes to the operation of the SNS owned POWGEN instrument. The commissioning of the instrument is in progress and the capability of the instrument even partially finished is sufficient to obtain unique data. POWGEN will part of the next JCNS call for proposals on Oct. 8 2010 where German affilitated users can apply for beam time on this call. We encourage everyone to submit proposals.

The JCNS school on data analysis for QENS using the program FRIDA succesful finished.
About 20 participants from various universities and research centers in Europe attended the recent JCNS school on data analysis organised by Joachim Wuttke, first instrument scientist at the backscattering spectrometer SPHERES at JCNS at FRMM II. The highly motivated participants were introduced into the basic concepts of quasi-elastic and inelastic neutron scattering and worked on data reduction and analysis with the program package SLAW and FRIDA. Problems and improvements of the programes were discussed and all partcipants enjoyed the fruitful and encouraging atmosphere of this school, which was organized the first time at JCNS.

Neutron polarization analysis reveal spin correlations in Sr2CrO3FeAs
A group of scientists of the Department of Chemistry at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and the Jülich Center of Neutron Science have revealed evidence of certain spin correlations in the strontium chromate iron arsenide compound by polarised neutron diffraction. The work has been published in a recent issue of Europhysics Letters, Vol 89, 37006 (2010).

World class 80% 3He polarization
The in-situ 3He polarizer, based on the spin-exchange optical pumping method, reached this high level of 3He polarization in a recent test performed on the TREFF reflectometer.

Teaching SANS remote controlled
The recent German-Russian Travelling Summer School 2009 used the opportunity to follow on-line a SANS experiment performed at the JCNS instrument KWS-2 at the German neutron facility "Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II)" in Garching.
